Austin Finlayison from Fletcher International Exports purchased 10 rams for its Condoblin enterprise.


The company later loaded 60 Charolais lambs from Camlea to take to Condoblin for a feedlot trial. At the recent Glen Innes show company founder Roger Fletcher praised Camlea Charolais and its crosses in his role as prime lamb judge.

Howard and Kerry Carter, Barraba, bought rams for repeat buyer Fermanagh Allan, “Coreen”, Barraba, to put over first cross ewes. “Charolais have good growth rates and are good converters. You can value add to your country with this breed,” Howard said.

Repeat buyers Warren and Graham Lockyer, Ben Lomand, bought five rams and will put them to Border Leicester/ Merino first cross maiden ewes for ease of lambing. But they will keep the daughters and build their Charolais content with prime lamb going direct to Woolworths through Thomas Foods International at Tamworth. “Our lambs dress out at 24kg, at the top of the grid,” Graham said.

Repeat buyers Jeff and Chris Pumper, Howlong, and will use them to replace Black Suffolk. “We switched for ease of lambing,” said Jeff. “And for their structure and their dress-out percentage.”

A previous infusion of Charolais has already worked to reduce the size of his Merino ewes and to add vigour. “This breed ticks a lot of boxes,”’he said. “They are a tight unit.”

Sarah Hunt and Travis Crouch, “Neverleven”, Mudgee travelled to the Camlea sale at Glencoe to build their flock of Charolais which is already proving fertile. “The breed has meat in the right cuts,” said Mr Crouch.

They produce a beautiful lamb. At Tenterfield show I got best pen of lambs by other than Poll Dorset and sold them for $180 a head.

I first tried Charollais rams 5 years ago. I was looking for an easy lambing easy finishing lamb from low maintenance small/medium frame Dorper/Damara ewes on light country. 


The Charollias rams have sired the lambs I was looking for. The ewes lambs easily. The lambs being born small but strong and they grow like weeds. Depending on the season they are sold as stores to a repeat buyer or finished on grain for a local butcher with some going through the Inverell Sale yards. The lambs come onto grain readily and finish well. The meat quality/carcase shape and yield from the Charollais sired lambs is more than I thought possible from my ewe base.

Since changing to Charollais Rams, we have seen several major improvements to our lamb production over our previous rams. Lambing problems have basically been eliminated, and as a result ewe losses have also been significantly reduced.


In our opinion the Charollais Rams produce a smaller lamb at birth but quickly develop into excellent high yield fat lambs. Our percentages have increased with a lot more triplets and from our experience the Charolllais offspring hit target weights earlier than those of our previous sires. In all we are very positive with the Charollais and look forward to next seasons results.

I started using Camlea Charollais rams three years ago, with great success. There are no lambing problems and they grow like steam. We have been using them over Dorset and White Suffolk ewes, with exceptional multiple births from the Charollais cross, compared to other breeds we were using.

As a repeat buyer, I have been very happy with the Camlea Charollais rams. Their earlier maturity complements my later maturing pure bred Dohne ewes. 


I have joined the Charollais rams to my 12mth maiden Dohne ewe lambs without any problems, in fact, we are having far less lambing issues than when using my Dohne rams. The lambs are very small at birth but have terrific growth that continues for the entire year.


The Camlea Charollais rams have a calm temperament that has had a beneficial impact on my first cross lambs.

Being a shearing contractor for 21 years, to earn off farm income, I have shorn just about every breed of sheep in every environment. No where have I found a breed of sheep as good to fit my lifestyle and farming. 


Charollais sheep are easy birthing, fast growing, high yielding carcase sheep. No matter what breed of sheep you put the rams over, they are always super quality lambs. 


My business takes me away from the farm, and it is a relief and a comfort to be able to return home and know full well that I am not going to find dead lambs, or ewes that have died giving birth. 


I wish I had known of the Charollais breed years ago. 


I have joined Charollais rams to Merinos, x bred maiden ewes with absolutely no problems at lambing.

I am forever confident about the Charollais, as I have come across absolutely no down sides to this point, only very positive money making, ease of handling which make them an awesome breed. 


I think this breed in Australia will be like the old steam train, once you get it rolling it will be very hard to stop.!
